Five Ways to Spice Up Your Outfits

Being a student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, comes with the responsibility of dressing formally for classes. This basically means that, unlike the rest of the student body, members of AVMS UI have to wear skirts and blouses and dresses and shirts and ties and shoes, as opposed to whatever their preferred mode of dressing is.

It is very easy to run out of outfit options when you have to wear the same things every day, and students run the risk of wearing drab outfits. There are some things you can do as a student who has to dress corporate to classes that can help to make your outfits always look like they were intentionally put together, and some of them are:

1.      Accessories

Accessories have been around from the beginning of time, and they are essential items for anyone that hopes to dress stylishly. Accessories can be anything from earrings to jackets. Bracelets, necklaces, the occasional hairpin, sunshades, bags, scarves, lapel pins, and brooches are all items you can accessorize with. Putting together a good outfit is in the details, and learning to combine the right kind of accessories is a very important part of fashion styling.

Hair accessories like barrettes, claw clips, scrunchies, etc., are also important items that you can incorporate into your everyday look.

2.      Footwear

The type of footwear you put on highly determines how your outfit will come across. For example, putting on a skirt and blouse and flat shoes comes across as normal office wear. Styling this same outfit combination with combat boots or loafers elevates the outfit to a little more than just casual office wear. You might think that being unable to wear sneakers, sandals and fancy slippers limits your options greatly, but this is not so. Combat boots, ankle boots, loafers, Mary Jane shoes, and Dr Martens are examples of footwear options you can explore. Heels are also a worthy option, but that might not be advisable considering the rigours of attending classes in Vet School.

3.      Socks

While socks run the risk of looking preppy, yet, if styled correctly, they can make all the difference in your outfit. Choosing the right colour and length of socks and being able to pair them with the right pair of shoes for an outfit is a skill worth learning. Socks always look good peeking out of boots and loafers. Consider adding leg warmers and pop socks to your outfit styling, too.

4.      Jewelry

Earlier, I mentioned accessorizing as an important part of styling, and while jewellery falls under accessories, it deserves a special place of its own. There are various types and lengths of necklaces, and wearing necklaces is not only limited to female students. Pearl necklaces have this way of making outfits appear classy. Silver, gold and beaded necklaces also have their own place in elevating your appearance. Being able to select the right kind of earrings to pair with your outfit will have you looking like a fashion expert. Hoops, studs and drop earrings are just a few examples.

Of course, I will never say no to multiple piercings. Not everyone wants these, but if you are willing to explore, then you should try and see how glints of gold reflecting off your ear switches up your outfit.

5.      Don’t be afraid to try new things.

A lot of creative styling is people trying things that otherwise wouldn’t go well together and tweaking them until it works. Don’t be afraid to try new things, let the creativity in you out. Add a splash of colour. Don’t be afraid to layer outfits. Think up outfits and colour combinations that seem awkward and find shades that blend in with each other perfectly.

It might be expensive to attempt to build a wardrobe from scratch, and this is a huge disadvantage for students trying to dress stylishly. Thrifting is a very good way to source clothing and fashion items. They are cheaper, and you get to have access to rare finds like vintage items. Going thrifting is also therapeutic, sorting through all those clothes and having options that can only be found once in a lifetime. That’s exhilarating, and you should try it.

TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest and other social media apps are sources of inspiration. There are a lot of people who put out content styling various outfits. You could follow these people and check out their stuff in order to get inspiration for your own outfits. Here's a TikTok video of someone styling an outfit that incorporates every tip in this article.

At the end of the day, in styling yourself, you have to find your style and make sure that the outfits you wear reflect who you are and what you’re feeling like on that day. Studying veterinary medicine is tiring, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look your best while pulling through it.
