The Role of Yoga in Mind Healing
Yoga is an ancient practice gaining widespread popularity in the modern world as a form of mind and body healing therapy. The word "yoga" originates from an ancient Indo-European language (Sanskrit) word, YUJ, meaning "to bind" or "unite."
It encircles a series of physical, mental and spiritual exercises that aim to bring equilibrium to the body, soul and mind. These include meditation, chanting mantras (incantations), breathing exercises, prayers and other selfless actions.
Although many people, especially those who practice Hinduism and Buddhism, believe that yoga is a religious or spiritual practice, some practice it as a recreational activity. In this modern world, yoga has been found to have effective therapeutic effects for people with mental issues such as depression, anxiety and anger.
The practice of yoga can help to balance the nervous system by reducing feelings of anxiety and stress. The breathing techniques of yoga also help to increase oxygen intake and blood flow to the brain, which can help to reduce tension and induce an overall sense of relaxation.
Also, yoga helps to strengthen the connection between the body and mind, which is essential for effective healing. For example, when the body is stressed, it activates the body`s "flight or fight" response, which can cause the release of some hormones such as cortisol, that can negatively affect mental health.
However, a person through yoga practice, can learn to develop control over their body and mind which can help to reduce the impact of stressors.
Furthermore, according to a journal of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Chikitsa yoga has been used as a therapeutic means for preventing and treating some medical conditions, especially non-communicable diseases such as respiratory diseases, chronic pain et cetera.
Improving flexibility, strength and balance is also one of the benefits of yoga practice. For people with chronic pain, practising yoga can help relieve discomfort and increase mobility.
Yoga is an effective tool for healing the mind and promoting overall well-being. Its unique combination of physical exercise, mental focus and spiritual connection makes it a popular method for managing stress, anxiety and depression as well as complementary therapy for various physical and mental conditions.
It is important to prioritize one's mental health, especially in uncertain times such as we are in at the moment—the widely dreaded exam period.
If you need to de-stress, perhaps, consider spending time practising yoga. Make your physical and mental health an utmost priority.
