'Staylites, But Still Freshers'–DVM I Students Officially Vet Students!
Getting admitted into the University of Ibadan is quite the achievement. But every vet senior knows that's not even the beginning for a veterinary student. With all the struggles in the Faculty of Science, the social distractions, and the intense activities, it is almost quite a feat for unserious students–like this writer–to make the cross successfully into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan.
So, with hearty hearts and laughing faces–there were a few sarcastic ones!–the entire faculty welcomed its latest crop of new entrants from the Faculty of Science on Wednesday, 20th September, 2023, in the famous White Coat Ceremony. By all means, call it initiation rites, but the profession is noble, so it's best we attach some dignity to the entry process.
The venue was the Faculty Auditorium, and Deborah Oladeji stepped up for host duties, as usual. There were preliminary activities while the final stages of preparation for the event were rounded up.
The event started off at 2.30 pm on Wednesday, with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Olufunke Ola-Davies, congratulating the DVM I students on crossing into the faculty. She introduced the faculty system to the 'freshers', as she stressed the importance of preparation for every end-of-module assessment, as well as the DVM Part exams.
Next up was Prof. A. B. Ayinmode, from the Department of Veterinary Parasitology, who gave a very vivid presentation of what vet school was and what each student needed to succeed–and fail–in the faculty. In his words, "Veterinary Medicine is a wild horse", and every student needs to tame that horse to succeed, both in the faculty and in life.
He highlighted several pointers needed for successful studentship. He emphasized the importance of having good grades, as they open doors for veterinarians, both as students and as graduates. "Certificate is not a scam", Prof says, while he stressed that the ‘career path’ for any of the new vet students was to read and get good grades now.
The Head of the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry, Dr. O. Azeez, came on as the next speaker, and delivered salient points for coping mechanisms as a veterinary student. He also delivered his version of the requirements for gunning for excellence as a vet student, which were not too different from Prof. Ayinmode's.
The students put on their lab coats at about 4.10 pm, formally identifying as bonafide veterinary medicine students of the University of Ibadan. Then the Sub-dean Undergraduate, Dr Olayinka Anifowose, took center stage to further stress what the DVM I students had heard from the speakers, while refreshments were passed around.
During the course of the program, some of the functional student associations within the faculty, namely the Veterinary News Organization, Veterinary Literary and Debating Society, and the AVMS Editorial Board, introduced themselves to the DVM I students. The AVMS President, Zaccheus Olayiwola, gave a vote of thanks, and the curtains officially drew to a close.
There was a photo panorama outside the Faculty Auditorium, as the students took pictures with the Sub-dean Undergraduate, as well as individual and group photographs and videos for memories.
It's a new dawn for the vet school 'freshers', and they will remember the day till they graduate from these hallowed grounds. Next up is a load of work and demanding schedules, but the DVM I students are determined to 'tame their horses' and rise to the challenge.
Till we have to hear from you guys again, hearty congratulations from us at the AVMS Editorial Board!
