Seals Cup 2023: We will be back stronger–Orodin

The AVMS football team was outstanding but unimpressive in their 1-1 draw against Forestry, as popular opinion was that the Vet team would deliver a comfortable win. They seemed more in control for most of the game, but a lack of flowing attacking moves and clinical finishing plagued the team, as their early opener was cancelled out by a penalty from Morata.

Hessy led the forward line as expected, and he had SAT and Teslim flanking him for most of the match. The team relied on a controlled build-up play involving Chibuzor and CK, and later Mona, as they sought a way to tear down Forestry’s disciplined defensive outlook.

Forestry matched the AVMS tactics with the more conventional counter-attacking football, using Morata and striker Obafemi as key targets for long balls. Obafemi looked dangerous at times, but Vet’s Dara was equal to the forward’s tricks.

A moment of press from Vet following a throw-in led to chaos in the Forestry box, where Hessy’s movement caused a Forestry defender to net one past his own goalie. Forestry had the upper hand from then on, forcing Dara, Timileyin, and even Orodin into dire situations, but the Vet defense held throughout the first half.

By the second half, Vet seemed to be more settled in the game, as Teslim and Hessy combined smartly, although the latter’s shot was well over the bar.

Against the run of play, Morata drew a foul in the Vet box and converted his penalty kick moments later to grant his team a lifeline into the game.

It was all Vet from then on, as Forestry seemed happy to share the spoils. Mona’s introduction provided fresh energy for Vet’s pressing moves, but the Forestry defense refused to cave under pressure. Mona saw an ambitiously chipped shot cleared in front of goal, and Teslim blazed one shot wide before sending another into the Forestry keeper’s hands.

Hessy also constantly kept up the pressure, but a second goal was not to be for the AVMS side. Orodin displayed goalkeeper awareness to keep the scores level, and the match ended as the first draw in the ongoing Seals Cup.

After the match, Orodin thanked all the Vet spectators, promising them that the team would revisit the drawing and come back stronger in their second fixture against Political Science on Saturday.

Fellow group G members Political Science and Electrical Engineering played a 1-0 match, as Political Science ended winners after a commendable display. They will be looking to extend their advantage over the Vet team, come Saturday, and the match is definitely one to watch.

Overall, it was an entertaining game, even if the scoreline was not satisfactory for Veterinary Medicine. The AVMS Editorial Board will be on hand to offer more reviews on the game as Veterinary Medicine advances through the

 stages.

Stay tuned.
