“One protest to address them all”: Uites get resolutions on student welfare, school fees discussions

The University of Ibadan Student Union (UISU) leadership, pursuant to their release earlier on Wednesday July 17, 2024, led students on a protest that saw total compliance from students and lecturers throughout the day. With academic activities on hold, a body of student leaders was received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Olapegba, who responded on behalf of the school management.

The proceedings took place in two separate meetings, where the Students Union leaders tabled the several concerns of the student community. After the meetings, the management and SU leaders came to several resolutions addressing the state of student welfare across campus.

The school management stated that a memo will be released to debunk the 10-hour power distribution schedule while scraping the August 4 deadline for payment of school fees. The management will also represent a new school fees schedule to the governing council as soon as possible. The electricity issues in the Alexander Brown Hall were also raised at the meeting, with the management deciding that maintenance will assess the situation on Thursday, July 18, 2024 for further actions to be taken.

Other items that were resolved were issued in a statement released by the UISU executives earlier in the evening.

The SU followed the above statement with another release, thanking students for their support during the protest, while requesting they return to their regular academic schedules on Thursday, July 18, 2024, to allow the management effectively address the resolutions.
