CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN THE FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, has been abuzz with excitement as several remarkable feats have been recorded this semester. Our personal favorite has been the sustained revival of the AVMS Editorial Board under its new leadership, but so many other things have happened.
In this article, we will highlight some of the noteworthy achievements that have taken place.
First and foremost, the WVA/MSD Veterinary Student Scholarship for the year 2023, was awarded to five deserving veterinary students in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan. The awardees include: Ahmed Saheed, Olowu Babatunde, Okewale Olalekan, Adeyemi Goodness, and Egbuemike Benedicta. The scholarship recognizes academic merit and provides financial support to students pursuing their passion for veterinary medicine.
In the same shell, some notable veterinary students emerged recipients of another prestigious scholarship that recognizes and rewards outstanding students pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. The Morris Scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to the field of veterinary medicine.
Away from scholarships, the iconic Faculty of Veterinary Medicine building, popularly known as “White House,” has become white again. The gleaming white facade of the building has been a familiar sight on campus, but over time, the paint had begun to fade, and the building was due for a makeover. A team of skilled painters, contracted by the faculty management, worked tirelessly to apply a crisp, new layer of white and army green paint, thereby restoring the building's original brilliance. The result is a stunning transformation that has revitalized the entire building.
Furthermore, the faculty of veterinary medicine, University of Ibadan, celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of veterinary education in Ibadan. This milestone, spearheaded by the Dean of the faculty, Professor Olufunke Ola-Davies, was highlighted by the week-long activities that took place, including: Rally, Dog Show 2024, Career Talk, Symposium, Novelty Football Match between Alumni/Staff, Pre-induction Dinner/Alumni Award Ceremony, and last but certainly not the least, the Induction of the 53rd Set of Veterinary Surgeons. This is a testament to the faculty’s dedication to producing skilled, compassionate, and innovative veterinarians.
The football team of the faculty secured a win in the first and second rounds of Seals Cup ’24, a leading football event in the University of Ibadan. Although our joy was cut short in the third round, the win against the defending champions — Philosophy, and Star boy Mbappé’s Statistics, demonstrated our team's exceptional knowledge, skill, and teamwork.
The Vet Medico Athletes also qualified for the finals after winning the semi-final, in the inter-faculty relay race, organized by the Track and Field Team, University of Ibadan. Although the final result wasn't what was hoped for, the dedication, grit, and commitment shown by the athletes was indeed plausible.
In other news, the student representatives of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Literary and Debating Society emerged as the overall winner of the Dove Haven Foundation 5th anniversary quiz competition, showcasing their exceptional critical thinking skills. This win underscores our dedication to academic excellence and ability to engage in intellectual discourse.
Worthy of note, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Literary and Debating Society also won the first round of the NAVMS Inter-School Debate Competition. Through the likes and comments of members of the University of Ibadan community on the YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages of the association, our victory was secured.
In conclusion, these achievements collectively highlight the excellence, dedication, and versatility of the veterinary profession. With these feats, the faculty — students and staff can look forward to an even more inspiring and productive session ahead.
