Is Vet L & D Making A Comeback?

When Adedotun Akande, president of the AVMS Literary and Debating society, resumed office in May, at the beginning of the session, witnesses heard him promising that the L&D will win the Jaw War this year. All outcomes considered, he seems well on his way to making good on that promise.

Jaw War: The Rise of Legends officially commenced on the 26th of November, 2024. The first round for faculties was held on Thursday, 28th of November. Ayodeji Toyinbo and Karen Hervie, both from DVM IV took to the stage to debate against the Faculty of Technology in support of the topic: “Regional Government vs Centralised Government: The Better Model for Effective Governance.”

Members of the faculty trooped out enmasse to show their support, with placards and chants.

With a score of 74.2%, the faculty of Veterinary Medicine did not win in their own round, but they emerged as the best losers. As a result, the faculty progressed to the next level, where they were to face the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The next task was to debate against the topic: Federal Character: An Effective Tool for National Integration.

In the early hours of Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, members of the AVMS L&D society received shocking news. They had been given the wrong information, as they were told to debate ‘For’, not ‘Against’ the motion.

This led to a flurry of activity, and the fear that Vet would have to drop out of the competition. One thing led to another, and the PANS L&D society put out a press release stating that if the situation was not rectified, they would drop out of the competition. The solution that the TLDS, UI came up with was for both faculties to proceed, while arguing on the same side, and the PANS L&D dropped out of the running.

Jide-Jude Akinola from DVM II, and Shalom Clinton from DVM III, now with no opponents, showed up to represent the faculty. Amid rushed preparations, the speakers recorded a decent 63%.

You could call it a streak of luck, but whatever it is, the AVMS L&D is making good progress.

The next round will be held at Tech NFLT on Saturday, 7th December, where we're facing our long-time running mates, the Faculty of Agriculture.

This time, our speakers are to argue in support of the motion, “The Feminist Movement in the 21st Century: Healthy or Toxic?”

While we have no information on who is to speak for the faculty, one thing we can expect is a good performance from our Literary and Debating Society.
